Growing Super: Chapter 16

Shortly after the super had flown away, the cops showed up and promptly arrested the men, putting them in two cars. Jack had seen this all from the same rooftop as before, where he’d been running the fight through his head, trying to see what he could improve. The answer? Everything. He had neither the speed nor the strength to be able to go into a fight like that, not even as a super.

As the flashing red lights faded into the distance, Jack looked up to the sky and jumped towards the few stars he could see through the city’s overwhelming glare. He turned to the direction his house was in and shot towards it, feeling it was time to go in for the night.

==================================================

Jack woke to the sound of his alarm, which he struggled to turn off with the heaviness of sleep still pressing down on him. After he went through his morning routine and stood outside to wait for the plane, the freezing cold weather of fall in New England woke his body up by making it shiver intensely.

The leaves started to blow around his yard, clearing out an area in the center, and Jack knew that it was the plane. He boarded it and waited to arrive at school, hoping that he’d be warm by the time they reached it.

Surprisingly enough, the temperature at the school grounds was moderately warm, despite being so high up. Jack suspected that there was an energy field surrounding the school, controlling the climate and other things. Squinting at the edge of the grounds, he thought he could see a slight glimmer, but couldn’t be sure. He wanted to go check it out, but a voice calling his name stopped him.

“Jack! Can you believe how warm it is up here? It feels like it’s summer all over again!” Max cried out, jogging over.

“Yeah, pretty cool, isn’t it? I wonder how they do it…” He trailed off, thinking about how it would be possible. An energy field that controls the climate would have to-

“Jack?”

Jack nearly jumped from the interruption in his thoughts. “Sorry, what did you say?”

“You were just staring off into space for about a minute, and you kept muttering under your breath.”

“Oh.” He didn’t think his mind wandered for that long. “I was just thinking.”

“Well, see you later, then. I got to get to class.” Max adjusted his backpack and walked inside. With nothing better to do, Jack followed him, going to his first class.

Shock was teaching again today, but he was dressed up in a different costume. He had some weird beard thing on his purple face, and a gold glove thingy that had some gems in it. Jack had found out that Shock taught all of his classes in a costume from a movie or a show earlier, and just decided to go with it.

Shock put on another movie for them to analyze, and told them to improve five examples of the banter for homework. Jack was just leaving the room when a hand touched his shoulder. He turned around to find a large man dressed in an all black suit looking at him.

“Jack Hall?” One of the man’s eyebrows rose as he asked this.

Jack gulped nervously. “Yeah?”

“I’d like to have a word with you. Please, follow me.”

The man lead him down a series of winding hallways that he’d never seen before to a gold door. He opened the door and motioned for Jack to go in. He followed Jack through the door and sat down at the desk placed at the opposite side of the room. He clicked a pen and the door behind Jack clicked shut.

“My name is Mr. Galloway. I’ve been watching the progress you’ve made with your machines, and they’ve impressed me for someone of your age.”

“How could you have seen them?” Jack asked. “Most of my creations were built in my workshop, and never left my house.”

“The suit, the material finder, the portal gun… All of them have been outside. It was the portal gun that caught my attention because it really screwed with my scanners.” He cracked a grin. “The reading were like nothing I’ve ever seen before, but then your suit came along. An anti-gravity device, if I’m correct?”

Jack nodded. “What’s the point to all of this, Mr. Galloway?”

“Well, you see, I’m a builder myself, and I’d like to help you understand your powers better.”

Mr. Galloway leaned forward in his chair.

“I want you to be my apprentice.”

First, I definitely got a laugh out of the Thanos/Infinity Gauntlet reference. Second, I wanted to tell you that I’m enjoying the story and looking forward to seeing more (especially what Jack’s final version of his supersuit will end up looking like)
